What is Tithing?

Despite the fact that many people use the word “tithe” synonymously with any church-related giving, the word tithe literally means “tenth.”
The tithe was an obligatory offering from the law of Moses requiring 10 percent of an Israelite’s first fruits. Because God provided the harvest, this first part was returned to Him. It was a reminder to Israel that all things we have are His. It was a show of thankfulness for His provision. It also provided for the Levitical priesthood, festivals, and the needy.

The First Tithe

And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
(GEN. 14:19–20), (NUM. 18:21), (2 CHRON. 31:4–5)

What are Offerings?

Offerings, on the other hand, are considered gifts given outside of (or in addition to) a tithe. While tithes and offerings are technically two different practices in generosity, they’re often spoken about hand-in-hand. Learn Bible verses about generosity to inspire your congregation and further your church’s mission. (DEUT. 12:5–6)
